This course will present students with an introduction to a sole proprietorship operating as a service business.  Students will learn about the basic accounting equation, transaction analysis, manual entry, sales, accounts receivable and payable, payroll, worksheet adjustments, and the complete accounting cycle, including adjusting and closing entries.  This course emphasizes a multi-column journal approach.

This course will present students with a corporation operating as a merchandising business.  Concepts learned in Bookkeeping 1 will be reinforced.  Students will learn about an expanded Chart of Accounts, purchases of merchandise, payroll, stocks and stockholders, notes receivable and payable, retained earnings, dividends, depreciation, and corporate income tax.  This course emphasizes a special journal approach.  PREREQUISITE:  Bookkeeping 1 (BK 231)

BUSINESS MATH 1

In this introductory course, students will review mathematical principles beginning with our numbering system, fractions, basic algebra, and percents.  Forms of measurement, such as our customary system of measurement vs. the metric system, will be covered.  Students will also review matters pertaining to personal income, payment of taxes, and preparation of tax returns.

BUSINESS MATH 2

In this course, students will consider ways of being “good stewards” of that with which God blesses them.  They will be shown the high cost of borrowing money and financing major purchases such as automobiles and housing.  Students will also look at the cost of purchasing the necessities of life and normal living expenses.  In addition, matters of insurance (automobile, life, and health) will be considered.  PREREQUISITE:  Business Math 1 (BM 121)

CHURCH FINANCE

Students will learn about some of the financial forms that churches must prepare and/or keep on file, such as W-9’s, W-4’s, W-2’s, 941’s, I-9’s, IT-4’s, etc.  In addition, students will be taught about some of the records that must be kept, and the length of time for archiving these records.  Students will also be informed of some serious matters that must be taken into consideration by a local church when choosing workers, volunteers, or bus/van drivers.

COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING 1 & 2

Students in this course will learn to use the QuickBooks Simple Start program.  They will begin by creating a chart of accounts, entering customer and vendor data, and setting up a pertinent items list.  Students also will learn such functions as recording sales invoices, purchase invoices, cash payments, credit memos, bills, as well as making journal entries and writing checks.  In addition, they will learn to generate reports that are necessary for decision-making and administrative purposes. The student will also be taught how to handle the following common problems or challenges: determining correcting entries, voiding checks, finding human errors, and handling payroll entry without a payroll program.  PREREQUISITE:  Bookkeeping 1 (BK 231)

Students will practice typing business letters and envelopes, with an emphasis on spelling, formatting, punctuation, grammar, and proofreading.  Students will also learn letter writing skills.

FIELD EXPERIENCE

During the student’s second year, he/she will be required to complete 64-68 hours of field experience in one or more of the offices of the Massillon Baptist Temple ministries (or, occasionally, at the student’s home church).  This may be done two (2) hours per week for two semesters, or four (4) hours per week for one semester.  This course will allow a student to participate in the actual day-to-day operations of a church and its various ministries, under the tutelage of experienced office workers.

INTERNET/WEB DESIGN

The students will learn Internet basics, including a brief history of the Internet/WWW (World Wide Web), safety, ethics, and management.  The objective of this course is to make students aware of the positive and negative aspects of the Internet/WWW.  The class focus will then shift to Web design and planning.  The students will each design a church Web site.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

This course covers the basics of a relational database.  Students will learn to work with database tables, queries, forms, and reports, as well as database management.  The course also covers the design elements available in Microsoft Access to make visually attractive forms and reports.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

Students will be taught basic spreadsheet skills utilizing Microsoft Excel, and will learn how to create, edit, format, and print Excel spreadsheets.  They also will be taught how to add charts to their worksheets in order to visualize their data.  In addition, students will be introduced to many of Excel’s built in features—such as AutoCalculate, AutoFormat, formulas and functions.  They will also learn to use and manipulate multiple worksheets.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

Students will learn to prepare presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, both from scratch and from the built-in design templates and AutoLayout.  They will be taught to add new slides, change the order of slides, display in color or black-and-white, create a bulleted list, insert clip art, create outline pages, and animate a slide.  In addition to the textbook projects, students will have the opportunity of creating their own presentations from scratch, as their final exam.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 1

In this course, students will be introduced to desktop publishing using Microsoft Publisher.  They will be taught how to prepare various types of publications—flyers, newsletters, tri-folds, and other business forms.  Also, students will learn how to import text, add and resize graphics, create columns, insert objects, and export publications in PDF format.  Basic desktop publishing principles—such as the use of pull quotes—will be presented in order to create an eye-pleasing document that grabs the reader’s attention.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

In this course, students will reinforce their desktop publishing skills using Microsoft Publisher.  They will be taught how to create publications from scratch, set page properties, use text frames, add pictures, format text, edit, create multi-page publications, add page numbers, work in the background, and add special effects such as Word Art.  In addition, students will learn how to work with tables in Publisher.  PREREQUISITE:  MS Publisher 1 (C3 121)

MICROSOFT WORD

Students will learn basic word processing skills utilizing Microsoft Word, and will be taught how to create, edit, and print Word documents.  Emphasis will be placed on attractive placement and proper formatting of various types of documents—letters, memoranda, reports, research papers, and résumés.  In addition, students will learn to work with graphics within a Word document.  Much attention will be paid to proofreading.  PREREQUISITE:  Basic Keyboarding and Computer Skills

OFFICE INTEGRATION

Students will learn the basic filing systems:  tickler, subject, alphabetic, geographic, and numeric.  The basics of Microsoft Outlook will be covered including using the calendar, task lists, appointments & events, notes, etc.  These basic skills will be utilized to complete the final project of the course.

OFFICE SIMULATION

Students will put their skills to practice using a true-to-life business simulation.  The work assignments given will reinforce his/her word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, and database skills—as well as their ability to integrate the various programs in the Microsoft Office 2000 suite.  The student’s primary focus will be upon the publication of attractive flyers, newsletters, bulletins, etc.  Proofreading skills will also be sharpened.  PREREQUISITE:  MS WORD (C1 131) and/or MS PUBLISHER 1 (C3 121)

Students will learn the basics of setting financial goals, preparing a budget, living debt-free and within their financial boundaries after giving to the Lord the firstfruits, preparing an income tax return, saving for a rainy day, investing for the future, and planning for retirement.

The student will be placed in a situation that will require him/her to set a long-term goal, as well as the necessary short-term goals to accomplish the task.  He/She will be required to plan the project from beginning to end, solve the inevitable problems along the way, learn to work as a team, and have the “stick-to-itiveness” to follow through with the project.  Students will also be in charge of photography.
