CHURCH MUSIC 1-A & 1-B

This course presents the biblical foundation and philosophy of music in its practical use in the church, home, and devotional life.  A study will be made of the "Language of Music," its rudiments, and how idioms and styles influence the church today.

CHURCH MUSIC 2-A & 2-B

This course presents the scriptural, foundational truths about music and its use in worship.  Consideration will be given to the importance of selecting appropriate music for the church choir.  A study will be made of the choral experience, its historical influence, the role of the conductor, the principles of vocal production, classification of voices, diction, and rehearsal techniques.  PREREQUISITES:  Church Music 1-A & 1-B (CM 121, 122)

MUSIC THEORY 1 & 2

This course introduces the student to the principles and procedures upon which music composition is founded.  The course begins with a review of the basic fundamentals and continues on to study chord constructions, chord successions, harmonic analysis, part-writing, melodic construction, and the characteristic elements of successful melodic writing.  PREREQUISITES:  Church Music 1-A & 1-B (CM 121, 122)

MUSIC HARMONY 1 & 2

This course continues to build on the foundation laid in Music Theory.  The student will be able to use the knowledge gained to effectively write and arrange compositions.  PREREQUISITES:  Music Theory 1 & 2 (MT 231, 232)

 

 

ET 321, 322

SIGHT SINGING/EAR TRAINING 1 & 2

Students will learn techniques in hearing pitch and identifying sounds.  They will also learn to read and interpret music scores without the use of a piano.

 

 

HY 312

HYMNOLOGY

1

 

This is a study of the historical development of hymnology.  Included in the course is the study of the backgrounds of many of the great hymns of faith and the contributions of significant individuals.

CONDUCTING

This course outlines the responsibilities of the conductor to the entire ensemble, as well as individual members.  The basics of conducting are presented along with exercises to develop a fluent conducting technique.

 

 

KA 321, 322

KEYBOARD ARRANGING 1 & 2

The student will learn to use the fundamental harmony studied in Music Theory and Music Harmony in a fluent and practical way.  Melodies will be harmonized with a wide variety of accompaniment styles.  Transposition, modulation, improvisation, and arranging will also be studied.  PREREQUISITES:  Music Theory 1 & 2 (MT 231, 232)
